Hair is something that grows on almost every area of the skin except the middle of your hands and the bottom of your feet. The hair that we have on our body is almost invisible, cannot be seen with the naked eyes. Hair consists of keratin, which is a protein produced within the hair follicles of the outer skin layer. While you may not have the ability to change the texture and growth pattern of your hair, aging and lifestyle changes can greatly be prevented when it comes to hair. It is important to understand how the growth cycle for your hair works in order to maintain healthy hair. Your hair goes through three stages of growth for a minimum of twenty times throughout your lifetime. Each hair follicle has its own growth and life cycle. This is influenced by a variety of things such as aging and illness. Let’s take a look at the three stages of hair life and growth cycle:
This is known as the growing phase, which usually last for up to seven years. The root cells divide quickly and create new hair growth at the follicle base. This then pushes the previous hair stands called ‘club hair,’ from the root. The hair growth is seen closer to your scalp and goes down the back of your neck as it grows. When you notice fast hair growth, you are in the anagen stage for longer.
The catagen stage is where you experience transitional hair growth for up to three weeks. Once the hair growth has maxed out, then the growth stops as it prepares to fall out and go through the renewal process. However, during this normal hair growth phase, the hair is still connected to the hair root.
The telogen stage is the resting phase. This phase lasts up to four months. By now, the club hair has been completely formed. The tip of the hair has a waxy substance when it falls out. During this stage the hair follicles are dead and minimal hair loss is evident. You will probably see the loose hair on your pillow or when you brush the hair. As soon as this stage ends, the cycle starts over with the anagen stage.
Your hair normally grows about a half an inch each month. During this time of hair growth, you should ensure that your hair is maintained with healthy nutrients and moisturizer. If not, you will experience thinning hair or hair loss. If you have any kind of imbalance or illness and if you make bad nutritional choices, you will see the difference in the growth cycles. If one cycle is cut short, you will enter into the next phase prematurely.
